MAPLE LEAF BRASS #15 - CHRIST IS BORN!

$10.00

by Robert Redhead

Using carols of an earlier age, this music attempts to express reality of the coming of Jesus. It reflects on the amazing act of God, that Christ, the redeemer of the world, truly became man.

Many years ago, St. Germanus used a wonderful phrase to express the coming of the Lord to planet Earth: "A great and mighty wonder, a full and holy cure! The virgin bears the infant with virgin honour pure." In 1609, M. Praetorius harmonized an old German tune as a setting for the verses that follow this great statement, and it has been sung ever since in various traditions at Christmas time.

Just a few years later, in 1643, Father Jean de Brébeuf, a Roman Catholic priest, translated the English lyrics of Canadian poet J.E. Middleton into the Huron language as part of his missionary work among these indigenous people living in what is now northern Ontario. Known today as the first Canadian Christmas carol, it echoes the phrase: "Jesus is born."

An early 19th-century carol adds to the portrait: "A child this day is born ..." and a very old carol from the 16th century expresses joy in his birth: "Unto us a boy is born" - one who is destined to become "the Lord of every nation."
