Written in a reggae style, this arrangement uses the traditional German carol Good Christian Men, Rejoice with brief references to O Come, O Come Immanuel. The title references the original name of the carol In Dulci Jubilo.

    COMMENTS FROM THE COMPOSER

Reggae is a musical genre not often employed by brass bands. As we progress forward in time, so does the versatility of musical ensembles that adapt to a multitude of styles with the aim of connecting with audiences effectively. With any genre of music, it helps to understand the style that is trying to be emulated. Reggae music originated in Jamaica in the 1960s as a fusion between traditional Jamaican folk music, American jazz, and rhythm and blues influences. Like most Latin-American styles, reggae is driven by percussion. While this piece is notated for Drum Kit, Congas (or Bongos) and Cabasa, additional percussion instruments can be added if there are extra players. Percussionists are encouraged to research the style in depth to achieve a solid groove as well as techniques that will help bring the style to life (Conga “slaps” and “palms,” Cabasa rolls, snares off throughout a la timbale.) The Percussion soli in bars 55-58 may be repeated if desired and presents the perfect opportunity to add extra percussion throughout the band to create a Jamaican “party” atmosphere. The Basses must work with Percussion to drive the piece, while all other parts relax on the swing rhythms. For the conductor, please note that 136 bpm is the maximum tempo as any faster will lose the reggae feel. The piece will also work at a minimum tempo of 120 bpm. It is hoped that this reggae setting will bring a new level of excitement to both players and listeners this Christmas.
